The school was founded in 1949. Geographically speaking, the school is located in Kanifing Municipality Council, Gambia.

The two teachers collaborating in the pilot activities developed by Mundus maris upon commissioning by the EAF-Nansen Project/FAO are Mr Bolong Touray and Mr Lansana Touray. Mr Bolong Touray is the Gambian teachers’ group leader for the purpose of this project. In terms of facilities the school has
(i) a library with sufficient space to conduct special courses or meetings
(ii) a computer room with three old PCs without internet connection
(iii) permanent access to potable water
(iii) a first aid personnel.
There are currently 4,051 children attending the school: 2027 boys and 2024 girls. The school has 98 teachers - 50 male and 48 female.
The subjects taught are (i) English language (ii) Mathematics (iii) Science (iv) Social and Environmental Studies (SES).
The EAF-Nansen principles are now officially incorporated into the curriculum as part of SES.
Serrekunda Lower Basic School follows the same syllabus as the other schools involved. Pupils have an average age ranging from 6-7 up to 11-13 years.
This school has the highest number of pupils in Gambia. It ranks very high in terms of notation established annually by the Ministry of Education: 38.50/40 for the finishing academic year (2011/2012).
