Getting to Viability from Vulnerability
There are several aspects of transitioning from vulnerability to viability. The primary approach consists of identifying vulnerabilities and trying to reduce them to attenuate the effects. But what happens if small-scale fisheries are confronted with unexpected threats and shocks? These can take many different forms. They can consist of changes in the market or fisheries regulations. Climate change is affecting the distribution of resources away from tropical waters. The Blue Economy mantra usually has no place for small-scale fisheries.
Yet, men and women in small-scale fisheries face these mostly unpredictable shocks all the time. This is why we need to consider resilience, which is about options, flexibility, and the capacity to deal with unpredictable shocks.The V2V monthly webinar end April 2022 with Dr. Fisket Berkes covers resilience basics and illustrates the resilience of small-scale fishers through several examples.
V2V March 2022 Webinar on Happiness and Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the source of happiness, which brings awareness of our connection with the environment around us and helps us live in harmony and peace with it. Also, mindfulness builds viability and resilience with changes in our lives. The ultimate goal of every human being is ultimately to be happy and well, and mindfulness prepares us for that. Mindfulness transits us from emotionally harming ourselves to being able to work successfully towards viability. Happiness follows success, and fosters viability over vulnerability.
World Ocean Day 2022: Rivitalizzazione. Azione Collettiva per l'Oceano
La sensibilità verso l'azione collettiva per la rivitalizzazione dell'oceano è urgente, ed estremamente importante. Alla luce di molti discorsi sulla sostenibilità, tanti perdono di vista il fatto che la "sindrome del cambiamento della linea di base" fa sì che ogni nuova generazione di professionisti "dimentichi" le condizioni precedenti degli ecosistemi marini, più ricche e produttive. Il ripristino della salute degli oceani richiede molta azione collettiva e cooperazione a ogni livello.
Giornata Internazionale della Donna: Contributo alla Fornitura Domestica di Pesce
"Riconoscere il contributo delle donne alla Fornitura Domestica di Pesce per la Nutrizione e Salute". E' stato il tema centrale di un webinar organizzato da Mundus maris Nigeria per la celebrazione della Giornata internazionale della donna 2022. Ana Menezes della FAO, relatrice principale, ha offerto una grande opportunità per esplorare la specificità della donna al di là dei discorsi ufficiali. La moderatrice, Stella Williams, l'ha invitata a condividere alcune lezioni basate sulle sue esperienze personali.
Forum di Trasformazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile 2022
Il Sustainable Development Transformation Forum (SDTF) normalmente raduna un centinaio di persone a Incheon City, in Corea, alla fine di ottobre di ogni anno. La pandemia ha costretto l'Ufficio delle Nazioni Unite per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (UNOSD) a tenere il forum online, per la seconda volta consecutiva. Il 2 marzo il focus si è concentrato sull'obiettivo di sviluppo sostenibile 14 (SDG 14). "Riprendersi meglio" dalla pandemia di covid era una delle principali preoccupazioni. Il forum intendeva anche dare un contributo alla imminente seconda Conferenza dell'ONU sull'Oceano, anche essa rinviata due volte, e ora in programma dal 27 giugno al 1° luglio 2022 a Lisbona. Cornelia E Nauen di Mundus maris è stata invitata come relatore in una delle sessioni sull'attuazione dello SDG 14: "La vita sott'acqua".

From vulnerability of small scale producers of aquatic foods to resilient food systems
A flourishing of research and policy engagement – including that by the V2V network – has led to increased understanding of the multiple causes of vulnerability in small-scale fisheries and has identified pathways to viability, including through the application of the FAO voluntary guidelines on small-scale fisheries. Small-Scale Fisher Leadership in Environmental Stewardship
In the January 2022 of the V2V thematic webinars Tony Charles discusses the leadership of small-scale fisher communities and organizations in protecting and restoring local environments and engaging in fishery management activities. Such environmental stewardship supports and enhances the viability of fishing livelihoods, as well as demonstrating that bottom-up community-based conservation can be the most effective way to produce big conservation benefits.

L'Accademia continua il suo lavoro a Yoff
Dal 22 al 24 novembre 2021 a Yoff, in Senegal, si è tenuto l'ultimo workshop di rafforzamento delle capacità per gli iscritti all'Accademia della Pesca Artigianale. Questo workshop era atteso da tempo perché le attività dell'Accademia erano state messe a mezz'asta per quasi due anni a causa dell'emergenza sanitaria. Obiettivo del workshop è stato per i partecipanti fare il punto sul lavoro svolto, proseguire con l'analisi della catena del valore della pesca artigianale nell'area di Yoff e sviluppare piani d'azione individuali e collettivi per i prossimi 12 mesi.
Wellbeing small-scale fishers derive from ecosystem services
The last monthly lecture in 2021 organised by the V2V research initiative was delivered 17 December by Ana Carolina Esteves Dias, currently at Waterloo University, Canada. She talked about how the notion of wellbeing had evolved starting from the 1980s from a cultural notion to today's emphasis on people-nature relationship. In between the attention had shifted to the economic conditions sustaining a good life and later also included non-economic values. Wellbeing was one of the ways to understand what enticed people to get into and/or to stay in small-scale fishing and related activities and made the profession viable.
