Mundus maris participated at the Annual Assembly of the European Geosciences Union. This is a week-long gathering of earth sciences from all over the globe in Vienna, Austria. Between 12 and 17 April 2015 some 11.500 scientists of all ages from more than 100 countries exchanged in nearly 600 scientific sessions.
How to tell stories about the science in ways that grip the wider public was a key concern for the Education and Outreach Symposium hosted by EGU2015. Mundus maris participated at that symposium presenting the poster below. It drew some attention as it was deliberately different from typical "scientific" posters. So it made a useful contribution to the session “Public Interest & Research Management – Earth Sciences for Society”. Click here for the blog.
On Friday, “neighbouring” sessions, to mention only two of interest to Mundus maris, were discussing “Geoethics for society: General aspects and case studies in geosciences” and “The use of Art in Earth education for a better planet sustainability“. Click here for more.
In view of MM activities the sessions “Geoscience Information for Teachers (GIFT) Workshop” and “Communication and Education in Geoscience: Practice, Research and Reflection” are also worth particular mention. So, if you are curious, you'll find a lot of stories told and even more to discover still.
Not withstanding the extensive programme on ocean sciences and its numerous sessions, there is still a long way to go to reach far into societies in order to help inform more sustainable decision making and even life styles.
In a nutshell: So much food for thought and so many people to meet. We were only a drop in the ocean. However, drops make the ocean.
