RUFISQUE CITY, SENEGAL
Location: Rufisque is located 25 km to the southeast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal
Founded: 1880
People: called inhabitants of Rufisque or Rufisqois (in French)
Population: 300,000 inhabitants in 2012; Source: Observatory of the City of Rufisque;
Subdivision: 3 Municipalities in the District
Number of boroughs: 92.
You have to go through Rufisque to enter the capital, Dakar, as well as when leaving it. Rufisque is the only department to include urban and rural areas.
The territory of Rufisque covers 42 km². Formerly a flourishing town because of its port which concentrated most of the economic activities, the situation of Rufisque today is, to say the least, alarming.
Indeed, urbanisation began with Lebou fishermen, the dominant ethnic group around the port area. It then spread quite slowly to the east and west, and later expanded northwards. The Lebou indigenous majority was joined by other ethnic groups from the north (Halpularen ...), the south (Diola, Mandingo, Manjack ...).
WEST BOROUGH OF THE TOWN OF RUFISQUE
Created: Decree No. 96-745 of 30 August 1996
Area: 259.5 ha
Population: 60,000
Number of boroughs: 26
The sea is the main natural resource of the municipality; first, because activities associated with the fishery are the mainstay of a lot of people (fishermen, fish traders and women fish processors) and provide the bulk of their income.
The artisanal nature and especially the lack of local support structures for the fishery have an impact on fish production.

The director is Dip FAYE (seated, in violet dress on the right of the photo), the deputy director is Doudou NDIAYE. The director is supported by 17 staff, of whom 13 are women.
Connecting with other initiatives:
The school has recently learnt about the pilot activities of the FAO - EAF Nansen project and been able to get some materials from the teaching kit developed to do our own testing.
We are quite interested to develop a collaboration that will open new perspectives to our pupils. We have been looking at what is being caught in the fishery and noticed that even protected species figured among the landings, including marine mammals and protected sea turtles.
We have a task at hand to introduce already our pupils to the need to respect the rules and protect overfished and/or threatened species, so as to be sure there is a better harvest tomorrow.
