Preparations for World Oceans Day 2017 in Senegal are already warming up. Aliou Sall and Bina Diop of the Mundus maris Club Senegal visited the public elementary school El Hadji Talla Ndiaye in Yoff.
They discussed with the principal and some teachers about supporting work with the ecosystem approach to fisheries and engaging with World Oceans Day in combination with the Mundus maris Awards youth contest. The educators present were Djibril Omar Hane, class CM1, Pape Ndiaga Wadj, CE2, Issa Beye, CE1 and Mamadou Ndiathj, the Arab teacher.
The Mundus maris Club Senegal with all allies and sympathisers in the country is preparing actively for World Oceans Day celebrations. These are taking root and are eagerly awaited. The 2017 edition should be special with a larger number of schools, including soccer training schools, which are showing interest.
Mamadou Mbaye, a fisher, also took part in the preparatory discussions in Yoff, a community traditionally depending on artisanal fishing. This was a direct response to the decision of the recent General Assembly of the National Collective of Senegalese Artisanal Fishers (CNPS), founded in 1987, and which took place 22 February 2017 in the Cocoa Beach Hotel in Mbour to renew its national bureau. The fisheries administration was represented by Ms. Adama Ngom. In the occasion the Assembly also decided to put World Oceans Day also on their action agenda.
