After weeks of Fridays for Climate that raised the temperature of the public debate, Brussels saw the biggest climate strike march in 24 Belgian cities and towns this Friday, 15 March 2019. Led by young people, but mobilising participants of all age groups, civil society organisations, trade unions, various public administration personnel the marchers sent a clear signal to politicians and companies to stop dragging their feet and act.
Setting out at 13h30 at the Gare du Nord, people streamed through the centre, shouting slogans and showing of a wonderful diversity of home-made signs and disguises. Passing by Rogier and Gare Centrale the marchers walked all the way through the centre to Gare du Midi for the closure with music and speeches starting around 15h30. The police estimated some 30,000 participants in Brussels alone, accompanied by tv and radio teams all the way through.
All around the globe, hundreds of thousands of young people took to the streets to demand climate justice NOW. In Belgium, the parliament is to vote climate legislation next week. The protesters demanded stricter rules and concrete action to implement the Paris Agreement and meet commitments.
