Some 40 environmental organisations throughout Spain together had called to participate, on Saturday, November 12, in a demonstration for climate justice and stronger efforts to curb climate change. The action was aimed at the participants of the UN Summit on climate change (COP27) meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
The analyses all show that CO2 emissions are still growing and governments and companies continue to spend massively on fossil exploration and exploitation.
In Madrid, a large public - among them many very young and also old people - moved at 6:00 p.m. with banners and music from the Atocha station to the Plaza de Colón. The long-awaited rain that had fallen shortly before the event could not prevent a large turnout that made its effects heard in the center of Madrid.
The participants ask for justice above all for the economically fragile citizens and countries that have contributed almost nothing to the crisis but are those mostly suffering from the consequences of policies in favour of fossils. They demand compensation for losses and damages and the rapid transition to renewable energy supplies to ensure that the still open window is used to limit the warming to 1.5°C.
Mundus maris was also present with an intergenerational delegation to point out that the protection of the oceans is also the protection of the climate.
